I'm really picky about my Amethysts -- generally, dark, but not TOO dark a purple (you just have to have light be able to get into the stone and bounce back out!) and often with red or blue highlights, depending on the stone and the direction of the light.  African Amethysts are generally acknowledged as having the best color there is for Amethysts.

This hefty Amethyst stone is set into a simple Tarnish-Resistant Sterling Silver basket mounting.  The stone weighs in the neighborhood of 12-13 carats, and measures 16x12mm.  It is roughly the size of a nickel, only oval.
